Voter Registration

Wisconsin is one of several states that passed Republican-sponsored laws that led to confusion about who can vote and what is required to vote. In 2016 it led to a huge decline in voters who typically vote Democratic.

There are many complications to the current law. But we’ll simplify it here:

  • You must have a Wisconsin Driver License, State ID or Certificate of Naturalization card and present it when you go to vote. See acceptable IDs in English and Spanish.

  • You must be registered to vote at your current address with your current name. Your ID does NOT have to indicate your current address.

  • If you are not sure about your voter registration status, you can check at www.myvote.wi.gov. We recommend requesting an absentee mail-in ballot NOW for the November election. You can make the request at www.myvote.wi.gov. Early requests for ballots may help reduce problems with getting them on time to return by the deadline

Things to note…:

  • If you have not voted in the last four years, the State of Wisconsin may have deactivated your voter registration. The State mailed cards in 2017 to 380,000 “inactive voters.” Inactive voters needed to return the card to their municipal clerk one month after receiving the card. Inactive voters who moved or changed their names, must register online up to 20 days (October 13, 2020) before the election at www.myvote.wi.gov.

  • If you are off-paper, ex-felons who have completed all the terms of their sentencing can vote. They must register to vote at www.myvote.wi.gov.
